a.k.a. Poor Richard's® Restorations

Romancing the Past

Keepsakes repaired, restored and proudly exhibited can be commemoratives, trophies, talismans and icons. Don't confuse the reality of immortality with the immortality of reality: one is between you and your preacher, and the other is between you and your preservationist.

J. Rickford, curator of Poor Richard's Restorations*, opened his studio in 1970. Originally, "the shop" was equipped to do furniture stripping and refinishing. Over the years services have expanded to include our exclusive and unique Commemorative Restorationssm, as well as accurate preservation, conservation, period restoration practices and documentation. Our expertise includes providing forensic testimony and investigating conflicts in art and storage issues.

Over a number of years, study in the People's Republic of China, Russia, Israel, Greece, France, England, Cuba and the United States has enabled Rickford to expand his atelier's capabilities even further. Poor Richard's Restorations can now preserve Russian objets d'art, Chinese pieces dating back to the Ming and Qing Dyniasties and other cultural, period, tribal and ethnographical pieces and collections from most parts of the world.

Insight into our Values and Visions for Tomorrow

"Preservation plays an important role in reminding us of how the past has helped shape our lives today, and offers insight into our values and visions for tomorrow."

Rickford's philosophy brings history to light, especially vital in this age of automation and disposable goods. His stewardship respects historical value. His inspired imagination can create intimate pieces which not only preserve the provenance, but reveal the special nostalgia and intrinsic meaning for the client, thereby linking reality with sentiment, the past with the present -- awakening a glow which we know as Midnight Rainbow TM.

Rickford makes a point of sharing his ideas, priorities and approach to his craft with others, and often speaks and makes presentations before business and civic groups and professional organizations.

Poor Richard's occupies its own specially equipped building in Montclair, N.J., which Rickford designed and built in 1984. The company has a faculty of approximately twenty highly skilled artisans, craftsmen, technicians and specialists.
